Simplification and Improvement
We have developed a software system that will simplify and improve diagnosis and medical treatment of human burn injuries, thus alleviating the large variations among surgeons regarding approximation of size and depth of burn injuries.
Exact Burn Surface Area Calculation
Results of surface approximation vary up to 50%, depending on the different experience and subjectivity of the approximation process. The advantage of the burncase system lies in the direct calculation of burned surface area. This calculation is based on the tree-dimensional model and may reach an accuracy of 1cm² depending on the model resolution.
Evaluation of Standard SCORES
Once the selections have been stored in the database, calculations can be applied in order to evaluate standard indices of burn injuries. For professional documentation of diagnoses it is necessary to encode affected body regions. Worldwide, there are lots of different classification and documentation codes in use. Thus, it is inevitable to support the most common calculations to keep the system open for future extensions and changes. BurnCase in its final version will support the following standard indices and classification codes:
- ABSI (Abbreviated Burn Severity Index)
- Baux Burn Score (Cape Town Modified)
- Lund and Browder Charts
- ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases)
- ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health)
- DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups)
- LKF (Leistungsorientierte Krankenanstaltenfinanzierung)
These indices and codes are based on parameters like the surface, size and injury location as well as the burn degree or other area characteristics. This is the reason why BurnCase allows assigning more than one attribute to every region in order to support several index calculations.
Reduce Work Expenditure of Surgeons
The major benefits that BurnCase creates are automatically generated reports that can be used for documentation and accounting purposes.
Base for Coverage of Service and Costs
The generated BurnCase records are stored in a relational database system and can, consequently, be used to build up diagnostic related groups which will provide a information base for coverage of service and costs.
Establish a New Standard According to Exactness and Accessibility
As a three-dimensional simulation system, BurnCase improves surface determination by calculating region surfaces up to a precision of one cm². This improves the average variation from 50% without software support to less than 5%, limited by the precision of the surface transfer onto the virtual model.
Improvement of Collaborative Work
An underlying database stores all entered case studies so that it is possible to perform comparisons of burn cases and animation sequences of the healing process of single wounds or whole bodies. When used as centralized burn accident registration service, a huge knowledge base of burn diagnoses and consequent medical treatment will emerge. This knowledge base will allow medical advices and diagnosis support for any kind of burn accidents, and it will consequently improve and support the primary diagnosis process of burn accidents. Thus, an enormous reduction of time and costs of medical burn treatment will be reached.
Documentation of SURGERY and Diagnoses
The intuitive user interface allows documentation of diagnosis and operations and supports the user by providing guidelines for entering complete datasets. The data is gained through the graphical interface allowing a much faster and intuitive access to stored information.
