BurnCase 3D

 
The software system BurnCase 3D allows to document all types of burn injuries on an appropriate 3D body model with a resolution of 1cm² and automatically computes the affected surface area per wound. Furthermore, medical encoding and scoring are integrated as well as an intuitive digital picture archive and a comprehensive set of additional burn-related data. BurnCase 3D is capable of recording, visualizing and documenting all kinds of burn injuries and their treatment processes in a clear and intuitive way. Surface data is acquired on three-dimensional models, which are adapted to physical parameters of the real patient with a resolution of one cm². By using computer aided methods, a remarkable reduction of workload in comparison to paper-based documentation can be achieved. The system facilitates an accurate and immediate calculation of affected surface areas and standard indicators like ABSI, Baux-Score, fluid substitution quantities and many more in real-time. Above all, BurnCase 3D enables an almost instant objective assessment of the patient’s condition. Besides thermal and chemical burns, BurnCase 3D allows documenting amputations, healing measures and surgical procedures. Moreover, the surface area of healthy skin can be calculated as a basis for exact transplantation planning.

The digital picture archive in BurnCase 3D completes the professional burn documentation. It is possible to assign digital pictures of the patient to specific locations on the 3D model surface (marked as pins) in order to easily recall them afterwards. Furthermore, specific model positions can be saved to every picture, which can be restored afterwards during picture review. Superimposing these pictures allows efficient and objective verification of injuries that have been assigned to the model surface. BurnCase 3D provides the ability to structure and document injuries easily and clearly as well as assigning digital pictures to various body regions. The digital picture archive collects all relevant digital pictures within BurnCase 3D. This allows searching for pictures by certain criteria like patient-data, timestamps, assigned body regions (pins) or injury severities.

BurnCase 3D provides a large data set containing numerous patient and case data. This data set has been carefully developed with regards to various hospital information systems and international data registers. However, it may easily be adapted or enhanced to special requirements. BurnCase 3D offers complete encoding following the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the International Classification of Procedures in Medicine (ICPM). By deriving ICD and ICPM codes on the basis of  injuries and anatomical position on the model, the documentation workload can be reduced to a minimum. Supplementary ICD codes may be acquired using the integrated ICD Browser. Furthermore, BurnCase 3D has been designed to collect all DRG relevant data.

The report module of BurnCase 3D enables creating comprehensive reports by a single click. The automatic generation of reports replaces the inconvenient obligation of filling forms by hand, although format and layout (Lund&Browder, ICD lists, etc.) remain. All reports can easily be adapted for institutional needs. The software aims at the establishment of a common documentation standard of burns, any participating institution is invited to help forming this standard. The worldwide collection of comparable data and the integrated data query tool with its simple and intuitive interface enables comprehensive data analysis in order to deepen the scientific understanding of burn treatment.

The graphical user interface provides an intuitive and user friendly input of burn relevant data. The system gives visual feedback concerning the completeness of gathered data. Reports can easily be generated by a single click, which saves a lot of time compared to conventional by-hand-documentation on paper.

BurnCase 3D is distributed in form of perennial research cooperations with the Research Unit Medical-Informatics. The research project BurnCase 3D is financially supported by public funds and developed at RISC Software GmbH, Research Unit Medical-Informatics, a non-profit research and development organization of the Johannes Kepler University Linz. The project is financed through funds from Upper Austria and the participating research partners. All the incoming money is reinvested in the project itself.
